JOLIBE designer Joel Diaz was born in the Dominican Republic where he spent most of his adolescent years in art school. At 14 he began learning dressmaking techniques from his mother. He studied fashion design at the Altos de Chavon School of Design in the DR, and moved to New York City after receiving a scholarship to study at Parsons School of Design. He then pursued a career in fashion, and worked with several designers before landing at Helmut Lang. During his formative 5-year stint there, he assisted Helmut Lang and focused on the development of innovative techniques and showpieces. Upon his departure, Joel put this valuable experience to use, directing his energies toward his own work while still consulting for various designers, including Patrick Robinson at Paco Rabanne (Fall 2006). In 2007 he opened JOLIBE with his partner, Christina LaPens, a photographer and art director. The Fall 2007 Collection marked the debut of JOLIBE during Paris Fashion week and has since been shown in New York. JOLIBE continues to receive favorable attention for its master tailoring, innovative fabric treatments and unique artistry.
